You can get off at any stop, wander around, then catch the next bus that comes along (they run every 15-30 minutes). Expect traffic. The routes are convenient for hitting the Colosseum, Vatican, Spanish Steps, and Pantheon without walking between them in the heat, but you’ll still do plenty of walking once you hop off. It’s a practical way to cover ground when your time or energy is limited, though it won’t feel like an authentic Roman experience.

Best time is spring (April–early June) or fall (late September–October). Summer is brutal on the open top deck with zero shade and long lines at stops. Expect to pay around $25–45 for a 24-hour ticket and $35–60 for 48 hours, depending on the operator and whether you buy online in advance. Skip the night tour versions; they’re mostly just expensive city lights with poor commentary. Pick the standard daytime red or green route that includes both ancient center and Vatican if you only have one or two days. One honest tip: buy the ticket online before you arrive and start early in the morning to beat both the heat and the worst crowds at the major stops.
