Expect a double-decker bus with an open top that loops around the main sights: Edinburgh Castle, the Royal Mile, Holyrood Palace, Grassmarket, and a few viewpoints near Arthur's Seat. Buses run every 15-25 minutes in summer and less frequently in winter. The 24-hour ticket lets you get on and off as you like, which sounds perfect until you realise many stops are within easy walking distance of each other. It's genuinely useful for reaching the farther spots like the Palace or the top of the Royal Mile when your feet are tired, and the live or recorded commentary gives decent context without being brilliant.

Best time is late spring or early autumn. Summer is crowded and the top deck can feel like a sauna; winter means you're often huddled under a blanket in the rain. Expect to pay around £20-£28 for a standard 24-hour adult ticket. Multi-day options are available but rarely worth it unless you're staying longer and plan to use the bus multiple times per day.

Honest tip: buy the ticket that includes the New Town loop if you want to see both sides of the city; the classic Old Town-only route misses the handsome Georgian streets. Skip the evening "ghost tour" bus versions — they're overpriced and the commentary is mostly nonsense. Sit on the right side going uphill for the best castle views.
