Should You Swim in Hoyo Azul Cenote?

Hoyo Azul is a striking limestone sinkhole filled with electric turquoise freshwater. You’ll hike about 10-15 minutes on a maintained jungle trail, then descend wooden stairs to a platform where most people swim and snorkel for 30-45 minutes. The water is cold (around 75°F/24°C), crystal clear, and about 15-20 feet deep in the center. It feels peaceful in the morning but can get crowded by midday with tour groups. There are no fish or marine life; it’s a freshwater pool surrounded by jungle walls. Expect basic changing areas and restrooms at the entrance.

Best time to visit is December to April when rainfall is lowest and the water stays clearest. Avoid heavy rain days in summer and fall as runoff can cloud the blue color. Expect to pay around $45-90 per person depending on whether you choose a simple transport-and-swim trip or a longer eco-tour that includes other cenotes, lunch, or ATV options. Hotel pickup is usually included.

Pick the straightforward morning tour that focuses only on Hoyo Azul if you want a relaxed swim without rushing. Skip the full-day adventure packages with buggies or multiple stops if you just want the cenote; they’re tiring and add unnecessary cost. Bring water shoes, reef-safe sunscreen, and a towel – the rocks can be slippery.
