Huntington Library Tour Guide

The Huntington is essentially three places in one: a serious research library, an art museum with strong British and American collections, and 120 acres of themed gardens. On a typical visit you’ll walk through elegant period rooms, see works by Gainsborough and Sargent, then step outside into desert, rose, Japanese, and Chinese gardens. Expect a relaxed but cultured half-day experience—more like wandering a thoughtful estate than rushing through a crowded museum. The grounds are large enough that you can find quiet corners even on busy weekends.

Best time to visit is spring (March–May) when the roses and camellias are at their peak, or fall for smaller crowds and milder light. Summers get hot and the gardens can feel exposed. Expect to pay around $35–55 per adult depending on whether you add a docent-led garden tour or a special exhibition ticket; kids and members get discounts. Parking is included.

Smart move: rent a garden guide map or join the free 45-minute overview tour that leaves from the entrance pavilion. Skip the overpriced cafe and bring a picnic to eat in the shaded areas near the lake—far more pleasant. Wear comfortable shoes; you’ll easily walk three or four miles if you’re really into the gardens.
