Ice Swimming & Sauna in Helsinki: What to Know

Ice swimming and sauna is exactly what it sounds like: you sit in a hot traditional sauna, then walk outside and lower yourself into a hole cut in the frozen sea. The shock is real – your body screams for the first few seconds, then a strange calm kicks in. Most people do 2–4 rounds, cooling off in the water for 10–30 seconds each time before returning to the heat. The experience is social, slightly ridiculous, and surprisingly addictive once the initial panic fades. Expect shared changing areas, cold wooden decks, and the very real possibility of slipping on ice.

Best time is January to early March when the ice is thick and stable. Winter daylight is short so most sessions run in the dark with headlamps or floodlights – which actually makes it more atmospheric. Expect to pay around €80–150 per person for a guided 2–3 hour experience that includes sauna access, guidance, safety equipment, and usually a hot drink or snack afterwards. Independent options at public saunas are cheaper but require more confidence and local knowledge.

Pick a small-group guided session your first time – the guide will watch you in the water and keep the pace relaxed. Skip the big tourist packages that promise “VIP” or add unnecessary extras like photography; they rarely improve the actual experience. Bring wool socks for the deck and a warm hat. After the last plunge, the post-sauna beer in the cold air is the part you’ll remember most.
