The ferry to Isla Mujeres takes about 25 minutes each way and runs frequently from the Puerto Juárez terminal just north of downtown Cancun. Expect a fast, modern catamaran with indoor AC seating and open deck space at the back. Once on the island the vibe shifts immediately: golf carts, bicycles, and a much slower pace than the hotel zone. You can do a quick day trip or stay overnight. The crossing itself is usually smooth but can get choppy if the wind picks up in the afternoon, especially during winter northerlies. The island's north beach is genuinely beautiful for swimming, though the town itself is small and touristy in a low-key way.
Best time to go is December through April when the water is clearest and seas are calmest. July to October brings cheaper rates but hotter weather, more rain, and occasional rough crossings. Expect to pay around $25-45 round-trip for the basic ferry depending on season and whether you buy tickets same-day or in advance. Add another $15-30 if you want a basic snorkel tour or beach club access on the island.
Pick the first morning ferry if you want a quieter beach experience before the catamaran crowds arrive. Skip the overpriced “all-inclusive” boat tours that leave from the hotel zone marina unless you specifically want the party-boat atmosphere and open bar; the regular ferry gives you way more flexibility and costs half as much.
