Island hopping from Phuket means spending a full day on a boat (usually 30–50 people) visiting 3–5 islands in the Andaman Sea. Expect turquoise water, dramatic limestone cliffs, swimming stops, and a packed lunch on the boat or a beach. The trips are scenic but not quiet — engines are loud, beaches get crowded by 11 a.m., and you’ll share snorkel spots with other tour boats. Phi Phi and Phang Nga Bay routes are the most popular; some include canoeing into sea caves while others focus on beaches and viewpoints. It’s a solid day out if you want to see several islands without arranging your own transport, but it’s more organised excursion than relaxed private experience.
The best time is December to March when the sea is calmest and the sky is clearest. May–October brings rougher water, more rain, and some routes get cancelled. Expect to pay around $60–$120 per person depending on the boat size, inclusions (lunch, snorkel gear, national park fees), and whether you choose a speedboat or slower big boat. Speedboats are faster but bumpier and usually cost more.
Pick the Phang Nga Bay tours if you want the James Bond rock and canoe caves; skip the standard Phi Phi day trip if you dislike crowds — those beaches are packed. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, water shoes for rocky entries, and earplugs if you’re sensitive to engine noise. Book a tour with a smaller group size if you can; the big party boats are cheaper but feel like floating cattle trucks.
