Johannesburg's jazz scene is gritty, warm, and genuinely good rather than touristy. Expect small to mid-sized venues with a mostly local crowd, strong musicianship, and a mix of straight-ahead, fusion, and South African flavours like kwela and mbaqanga influences. Sets usually run long, the sound is loud, and the atmosphere can swing from reverent listening to dancing and chatting. It's not dinner-jazz background music – people are here for the music.
