Karura Forest Walk in Nairobi: What to Know

Expect a surprisingly peaceful escape from Nairobi traffic just 15 minutes from the city center. The forest has wide, well-maintained dirt trails through tall indigenous trees, with a few small waterfalls and a river that you can reach on foot. It's more of a gentle nature walk than a serious hike—mostly flat, shaded, and peaceful once you're away from the entrance. You'll see monkeys, many birds, and occasionally a few colobus if you're lucky. The main loop with the waterfalls takes 2–3 hours at a relaxed pace. It's genuinely refreshing but still feels like a city park rather than deep wilderness.

The best time is the dry season (June to October or January to February) when the trails are less muddy and the waterfalls are still running. Avoid the peak of the long rains (April–May) unless you like slippery paths. Expect to pay around $40–70 per person for a guided walking tour including entry; solo entry is cheaper if you just want to wander without a guide, but most visitors prefer having someone point out the birds and history.

One solid tip: choose the shorter morning waterfall walk over longer 5–6 hour “safari” versions that mostly drive—you'll see and hear more on foot. Skip bringing lots of food or valuables; there are decent picnic spots but monkeys are bold. Wear proper walking shoes and insect repellent, especially in the wetter months.
