Kayaking the Charles River in Boston

The Charles River is a surprisingly pleasant place to kayak right in the middle of Boston. Expect calm, flat water with views of the skyline, universities, and parkland on both banks. It's an easy paddle, more urban scenery than wilderness, but that's the appeal: you can be on the water for an hour or two and still grab dinner in the city afterward. Wildlife is common (herons, turtles, occasional geese), and on weekdays it's often quiet. Weekends bring more boat traffic near the basin. The experience is relaxing rather than thrilling—no rapids, just steady paddling with current help in certain stretches.

Best time is May through early October. June to September offers warmest weather and longest days, though July and August can be hot and humid. Spring and fall bring fewer crowds and better light; avoid November–April when water is cold and most rentals close. Expect to pay around $25–45 per hour for a basic kayak rental or $60–90 for a two-hour guided group tour. Longer outings or sunset paddles push toward the higher end.

Pick a morning or early afternoon departure to avoid afternoon winds and crowds. If you're comfortable paddling, skip the big group tours and rent a single or tandem kayak on your own from the Allston/Brighton area—it gives you freedom to explore at your pace. Bring water, sunscreen, and a dry bag; don't bother with expensive waterproof phone cases if you stay close to shore.
