Mauritius offers reliable trade winds and warm, turquoise water, making it a solid kite surfing destination. Expect steady 15-25 knot winds most days, flat water lagoons perfect for beginners and intermediates, and some reef breaks for advanced riders. The experience is relaxed compared to busier spots like Tarifa or Cabarete – fewer crowds, but you’ll still share the water with others. Lessons are widely available and instructors are generally patient with beginners. You’ll be riding a shortboard in warm water with no wetsuit needed, which feels pretty great.
The best time is June to November during the Southeast trade wind season, with July to October being peak. December to February can work on the west coast but winds are lighter and less consistent. Expect to pay around $80-150 for a half-day lesson including gear, or $400-700 for a 5-day beginner course. Independent rentals run $50-90 per day once you’re past beginner level.
Pick a spot on the east or southeast coast (Le Morne is popular for its flat lagoon) if you’re learning. Skip trying to wing it without lessons if you’re new – the reefs are shallow and unforgiving. One honest tip: book your first 2-3 days of lessons in advance during peak season, but don’t lock in a full week until you’ve tested the wind and the school’s teaching style.
