Should You Hike Koko Crater in Honolulu?

The Koko Crater hike is a short but intense 1.5-mile round-trip stair climb up an old railroad bed on Oahu’s southeast corner. Expect 1,000+ uneven railroad ties that turn into a serious leg burner, especially in the Hawaiian sun. The payoff is a solid 360-degree view over Hanauma Bay, the Koolau mountains, and the coastline. It’s steep, exposed, and can feel crowded on weekends. Most people take 45–90 minutes up and down depending on fitness level. It’s not a casual stroll—bring water, wear real shoes, and accept that you’ll be sweaty.

Best time is early morning (before 8am) year-round to beat the heat and the worst of the crowds. Summer (May–September) is hotter and drier; winter (December–March) can be windier but slightly cooler. Expect to pay around $0 if you drive yourself and park at the trailhead, or $80–$150 if you join a small-group tour that includes round-trip transport from Waikiki. Skip the crowded midday hours and any tour that bundles this with too many other stops in one day—you’ll be exhausted.
