Korkeasaari Zoo: Worth Visiting in Helsinki?

Korkeasaari is a compact but well-run zoo on a small island just off Helsinki's coast. Expect a relaxed half-day visit with around 160 species, from snow leopards and Amur tigers to tropical birds and monkeys. The layout is hilly and quite walkable, with decent viewing areas and a nice mix of Nordic and exotic animals. It's clean, the animals look well cared for, and the sea views between enclosures are a bonus. In summer you can combine it with a 15-minute ferry ride from the city center; in winter the boat stops and you take a regular bus instead.

Best time is late spring through early autumn (May–September) when everything is open, the animals are active, and the ferry runs. Summer weekends get busy with families. Expect to pay around €18–25 for an adult ticket including the return boat in summer; winter bus access is cheaper. Families should budget roughly €45–60 total for two adults and one child.

Honest tips: Prioritise the big cats and the snow leopard area — they’re the highlight. Skip the small petting zoo section if you’re short on time; it’s nothing special. Bring your own snacks or a picnic — the on-site café is average and overpriced. Wear proper shoes: the paths can be steep and slippery when wet.
