This is a fun, active half-day experience where you paddle a sit-on-top kayak along La Jolla’s rocky coastline, ducking into several sea caves and getting close to harbor seals, sea lions, and seabirds. The tour usually lasts 2–2.5 hours on the water. Expect some swell and small waves near the cave entrances; guides help you time your entry and exit. The water is often clear enough to see kelp beds and fish below you. It’s genuinely beautiful, but it’s a real paddle—not a lazy float. You’ll get wet and work a bit, especially if the wind picks up.
Best time is late spring through early fall (May–October) when the ocean is calmer and visibility is better. Summer weekends get crowded, so mid-week or shoulder months (April, early November) are ideal. Expect to pay around $65–$95 per person for a standard guided tour. Tandem kayaks are usually a little cheaper than singles.
Pick a morning tour if you want better light and fewer crowds. Skip the sunset version unless you’re very comfortable paddling in lower light. Bring a waterproof bag for your phone and a change of clothes for afterward—you’ll be damp. If you get seasick easily, take something beforehand; the caves can feel surprisingly enclosed when a wave rolls in.
