La Scala is the world's most famous opera house and still functions as a working theater with a busy season. Expect a formal, old-school experience: dress up (jacket and tie for men isn't mandatory but you'll feel out of place without it), sit in a beautiful but sometimes cramped historic venue with excellent acoustics, and watch world-class productions. The theater itself is smaller than many tourists imagine. Guided daytime tours let you see the auditorium, museum, and backstage areas without attending a performance. The best time is the opera season from December to July; summers are quiet with mostly ballet or concerts. Avoid January if you dislike extreme cold in the city.
Expect to pay around €30-€80 for a basic tour or museum ticket. Opera tickets range wildly: gallery seats or standing places can start from €15-€40 if you're lucky, while decent orchestra or box seats often run €150-€400+. Top premieres easily exceed €500. Tip: skip the big opening-night galas unless you have deep pockets and patience for the social scene. Instead, go for mid-week performances in February or March when prices are saner and the quality is still excellent. Book as early as possible; popular shows sell out months ahead. If you're not an opera fan, the daytime tour is the smarter, cheaper choice.
