Zurich Lake Boat Rental: Worth It?

Renting a small motorboat or electric boat on Lake Zurich is one of the most pleasant ways to spend a warm day in the city. You leave the crowds on the promenade behind, cruise past the lakeside villas, and get surprisingly good views of the Alps on clear days. Expect calm, clean water, easy navigation (no license needed for boats under 6hp), and the freedom to stop for a swim or picnic. The experience is relaxing rather than thrilling – think puttering along at 8–12 km/h while drinking a cold drink, not wakeboarding.

Best time is June through early September. Late spring and early autumn can still work but the water is colder and rentals close earlier. Expect to pay around CHF 80–150 per hour for a 4–6 person electric or small petrol boat; half-day rentals (4 hours) usually offer better value at roughly CHF 250–450. Full-day rates push CHF 500–800 depending on boat size and season.

Tip: Skip the big tourist pedal boats and go for a proper electric motorboat instead – quieter and you can actually go somewhere. Book a late afternoon slot in summer; the light is beautiful and the lake gets much calmer after 4pm. Bring sunscreen, a hat, and your own drinks – the few places that rent boats charge airport prices for beer and snacks.
