A typical lake cruise on Wakatipu lasts 1.5 to 4 hours and takes you across the water in either a modern boat or the old steamship. Expect beautiful mountain views the whole way, a short stop at a historic farm for tea, scones, and a quick look at sheepdogs and deer. The ride itself is smooth and relaxed; it's more scenic ferry than thrill ride. In good weather the light on the Remarkables is excellent for photos. In bad weather it can feel cold and grey even with the heaters on.
December to March is easiest – longer days, higher chance of blue skies, and the lake looks its best. Shoulder months (October–November and April) are cheaper and quieter but you roll the dice on weather. Expect to pay around NZ$80–160 per adult depending on whether you choose the basic scenic cruise or the version with the farm tour and meal. Kids are roughly half price.
Pick the shorter scenic cruise if you just want the views and photos. Skip the longer “adventure” packages that add a lot of time on shore doing touristy farm activities unless you genuinely enjoy that sort of thing. Bring a warm layer even in summer; the wind on the water can be biting.
