A typical Lanai catamaran snorkel trip is a full-day outing (3.5–5 hours) that sails from Honolulu to the leeward side of Lanai. You get about an hour of snorkeling in clear water with healthy reefs, lots of tropical fish, and turtles. The boat usually stops in a couple of spots. Many trips also spend time with spinner dolphins on the way there or back; when conditions are right the boat can drift quietly inside a pod and you’ll see them spinning and jumping close by. The ride across the channel can be choppy, especially in winter, so take motion sickness seriously if you’re prone to it. The boat has a bathroom, shaded areas, and they provide snorkel gear, lunch, and drinks.
Best time is spring and summer (April–September) when the channel is usually calmer and visibility is better. Expect to pay around $180–$260 per adult depending on whether it’s a basic tour or one that includes dolphin-focused time and better food. Kids are cheaper. Book the morning departure if you want calmer seas and better light for snorkeling.
Honest tip: Choose the longer 4-hour+ version that actually spends real time on the Lanai side instead of the shortest “express” trips that feel rushed. Skip the add-on underwater scooter or “dolphin guarantee” upsells; the dolphins show up or they don’t, and the scooters mostly just stir up sand. Bring your own reef-safe sunscreen and a waterproof phone case—you’ll want both.
