Should You Do the Maasai Market Tour in Nairobi?

The Maasai Market in Nairobi is a lively, crowded outdoor bazaar where hundreds of vendors sell beads, jewelry, textiles, baskets, carvings, and souvenirs. Expect a full-on bargaining environment with persistent but generally good-natured sellers who will call out to you and follow you down the aisle. The real market (not the smaller tourist versions) is only open on Saturdays and Sundays, usually winding down by 7 pm. A typical half-day guided tour with hotel pickup lasts 3–5 hours and combines the market with a quick city orientation. It’s energetic and colorful, but it can feel chaotic and overwhelming if crowds or haggling stress you out.

Best time to go is during the dry seasons (January–March or June–October) when roads are better and you won’t be slogging through mud. Expect to pay around $35–70 per person for a small-group tour including transport; private tours sit at the higher end. The actual market is free to enter.

Smart tip: Focus on beadwork, leather goods, and Maasai blankets — these are well-made and easy to pack. Skip the generic wooden masks and “tribal” spears; they’re mostly mass-produced elsewhere. Decide your maximum spend before a vendor starts the theatrical bargaining dance, and don’t be afraid to walk away. The experience is more about the atmosphere than finding museum-quality pieces.
