Malibu Hike Guide: What to Expect

A Malibu hike typically means a moderate 2-mile loop through rolling hills, working vineyards, organic gardens, and old Chumash cave paintings. Expect sweeping ocean views on clear days, a mix of sun and shade, and a relaxed pace that feels more like a casual ramble than a workout. The trail is mostly easy dirt path with some gentle climbs; you'll finish in 1.5–2 hours. It's genuinely pleasant but not wilderness—think semi-cultivated landscape with occasional other hikers and guides.

Best time is spring (March–May) when wildflowers are out and temperatures are mild. Fall runs a close second. Skip summer if you hate heat; winter can be muddy after rains. Expect to pay around $80–$150 per person depending on whether you add wine tasting, lunch, or a private guide. Group tours sit at the lower end, while private or horseback options push toward the top.

Pick the version that includes the cave paintings and a stop for local wine—it's the clearest reason to drive out from LA. Skip the horseback version unless you already ride; the terrain isn't especially exciting on a horse and it doubles the price. Bring water, sunscreen, and good shoes. Go early to avoid the worst of the afternoon heat and crowds.
