You paddle through narrow waterways lined with thick mangrove roots, limestone cliffs rising straight out of the water. Expect to see crabs, egrets, and sometimes monkeys. The tours are usually half-day: a van picks you up from your hotel in Phuket, you drive about an hour to the launch point near Phang Nga Bay, then spend 1.5–2 hours on the water with a guide. It’s calm, shaded, and surprisingly peaceful once you’re away from the main boat traffic. Not a hardcore workout — more like a scenic paddle with decent exercise.
Best time is November to April when the weather is dry and seas are calmest. May–October can still work but expect afternoon rain and rougher transfers. Expect to pay around $35–70 per person for a standard half-day tour including transport, kayak, life jacket, and a basic lunch or fruit. Private or luxury options run $100–150.
Pick the smaller-group tours that launch from quieter spots like Ao Nam Mao rather than the big tourist piers — you’ll see more wildlife and fewer longtail boats. Skip the ones that combine it with elephant rides or island “discoveries”; they rush the mangrove part and feel like a conveyor belt. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, bug spray, and a dry bag for your phone.
