Manta Ray Snorkeling in Bali: What to Know

Expect a full-day boat trip from Sanur or Padang Bai to Nusa Penida and Lembongan. You’ll usually hit three or four snorkel spots, with Manta Bay being the star. The mantas often glide right overhead or beside you in relatively shallow water; it’s thrilling when they appear but the visibility and number of rays vary day to day. Between sites you’ll snorkel reefs with turtles, reef fish and some decent coral. The boat rides can be bumpy, especially in the channel, and you’ll share the water with other groups when it’s busy.

The best time is May to October when the seas are calmer and plankton attracts mantas more reliably. December to March often has rougher water and poorer visibility. Expect to pay around $45–85 per person depending on whether it includes lunch, gear, and a smaller group size. Private or semi-private trips sit at the higher end and are worth it if you dislike crowds.

Pick a tour that visits Manta Bay plus at least two other sites and keeps the group under 10 if possible. Skip anything that promises “guaranteed” manta sightings or adds extras like banana boat rides – they’re usually rushed and lower quality. Bring your own reef-safe sunscreen and a rash guard; many cheaper operators use standard sunscreen that harms the reef.
