Should You Do a Market Tour in Ho Chi Minh City?

A typical Ho Chi Minh City market tour takes you to a mix of wholesale and retail markets like Ben Thanh, Binh Tay, and sometimes a smaller local one. Expect crowds, constant motorbike traffic, and a guide pointing out fruits, spices, and street snacks while you dodge vendors trying to sell you everything from fake watches to fresh durian. The experience is noisy, humid, and genuinely interesting if you like food and local commerce; it’s less fun if you hate being in dense, chaotic places. Most tours last 3–4 hours and combine walking with some van transfers.

The best time is the dry season from December to April when it’s slightly less sweaty. Expect to pay around $35–65 per person depending on group size and whether it includes a cooking class or just the tour. Private tours sit at the higher end.

Pick tours that visit a wet market early in the morning for the real atmosphere and let you taste unfamiliar fruits. Skip the ones that drag you into too many souvenir shops or “factories” clearly geared at commissions. Wear comfortable shoes, bring small cash for snacks, and don’t be afraid to say no to samples you don’t want.
