Masada Sunrise Hike from Tel Aviv

The Masada sunrise hike is a solid half-day trip from Tel Aviv that combines a steep 30-40 minute climb up the Snake Path with one of the most dramatic desert sunrises you'll see. You reach the top of the fortress right as the sun breaks over the Dead Sea and the mountains of Jordan. After exploring the ruins (Roman ramp, palaces, cisterns) you usually descend by cable car. Most tours then stop at Ein Gedi for a short walk to a small waterfall and a quick float in the Dead Sea. Expect an early pickup (around 3-4am), a long day, and a fair bit of walking on uneven stone paths. It's strenuous but short enough that reasonably fit people manage it fine.

Best time is March to May or October to early December when it's not brutally hot. Skip the height of summer unless you love 40°C desert hikes. Expect to pay around $120-180 per person from Tel Aviv including transport, guide, cable car, and park entry. Food and Dead Sea floats are usually extra. One honest tip: choose the version that includes Ein Gedi if you want a quick nature break; otherwise the pure Masada-and-Dead-Sea option is more focused. Skip trying to do this independently from Tel Aviv unless you have your own car; the logistics at 3am aren't worth the hassle.
