Venetian Mask Workshop Guide

A mask-making workshop is one of the better hands-on activities in Venice. You spend 1.5–2 hours in a small studio learning basic techniques: choosing a pre-made papier-mâché base, applying gesso, painting, and decorating with glitter, feathers, or gold leaf. The instructor explains the history and different traditional mask shapes while you work. At the end you take home your own mask. It’s genuinely satisfying if you enjoy crafts, less so if you’re hoping for a deep art lesson or a wild carnival party. Expect a calm, slightly touristy experience with 6–12 people per session.

Best time is January and February during Carnival season when the atmosphere matches the activity, though workshops run year-round. Avoid peak holiday weekends if you dislike crowds in the studio. Expect to pay around €45–€85 per person depending on group size and how fancy the materials are; private sessions cost more. Pick a smaller afternoon class so you’re not rushed. Skip the add-on “gondola + workshop” combos—they’re overpriced and the boat ride is separate anyway. Bring an empty daypack; finished masks are delicate and don’t fit well in suitcases.
