MCG Stadium Tour: Worth It?

The MCG tour gives you behind-the-scenes access to one of the world’s great sporting venues. Expect to walk through player changing rooms, sit in the coaches’ boxes, step onto the grass of the famous oval, and hear stories about its long history in cricket and Australian rules football. Tours last about 90 minutes and are led by knowledgeable volunteer guides, many of them longtime members. It’s straightforward and informative rather than flashy. If you’re into sports or want a sense of Melbourne’s sporting culture, it’s genuinely interesting; if you’re not, it can feel a bit long.

Best time to visit is during the Australian winter (June–August) when the AFL season is on – the stadium feels alive. Summer tours are quieter but can be hot on the open stands. Expect to pay around $25–$45 for a standard tour; add $10–20 if you combine it with the Australian Sports Museum. Private tours sit at the higher end.

Tip: Book the basic guided stadium tour and skip the museum unless you’re a serious sports nut – the tour itself is the main event. Wear comfortable shoes; you’ll do a lot of walking and stairs. Go early in the day to avoid the biggest crowds.
