Most travelers head to Jerónimos Monastery in Belém. Expect crowds, especially around the cloister where people shuffle slowly taking photos. The church is free and quieter; the full monastery ticket gets you the ornate cloisters, refectory, and upper galleries with decent views. It's impressive 16th-century Manueline architecture but can feel like a tick-box sight once you're inside fighting for space. The experience is more architectural than spiritual — very few monks remain.
Best time is shoulder season (March–May or October–November) when lines are shorter and the weather is mild. Avoid summer weekends and afternoons. Expect to pay around €15–30 total per person: €10–12 for the monastery ticket, plus a guided tour or skip-the-line pass if you hate queuing. Transport from central Lisbon adds another €5–10 round-trip.
Pick the early morning slot if you can; the light is better and crowds thinner. Skip paying extra for an audio guide — the information panels are sufficient and you can always read up afterward. If you're short on time or energy, just visit the church for free instead of doing the full site. It's still worth seeing once, but don't over-romanticize it.
