The Mont Salève cable car is a quick, no-fuss way to get high above Geneva for views over the city, lake, and Alps. Expect a steep but short ride (about 10 minutes) that pops you out at roughly 1,000m. At the top you'll find a basic restaurant, a few easy walks, and some steeper trails if you want real hiking. The panorama is genuinely impressive on clear days, especially at sunset, but it's popular with locals so it can feel busy on weekends. The whole round trip from central Geneva takes 2–3 hours including bus transfers.
Best time is late spring through early autumn. Summer offers the longest days and clearest visibility; avoid winter unless you specifically want snow—some facilities close and the cable car schedule thins out. Expect to pay around CHF 25–40 per adult for a return ticket, plus about CHF 3 each way for the bus from the city. Families and frequent visitors can find slight discounts with local transport passes.
Tip: take the #8 bus to the base then walk the short steep path to the station—it's faster and cheaper than waiting for the direct shuttle. Skip the overpriced cafeteria at the summit and bring a sandwich instead; the real value is the view and a 30-minute walk along the ridge, not the food.
