Mountain Biking in San Jose: Worth It?

Mountain biking excursions out of San Jose del Cabo typically take you into the desert foothills or up into the Sierra de la Laguna. Expect a mix of dirt roads, loose gravel, and some single-track with cacti everywhere. The rides range from gentle cruiser-style tours to proper technical descents with 800-1500 ft of climbing. Most half-day trips last 3-4 hours including transport from your hotel. It's hot, dusty, and very exposed, so the scenery is dramatic but unforgiving. You'll see cardón cacti, desert scrub, and possibly some marine views on the way back. Don't expect lush forest biking; this is arid terrain that will rattle your teeth on the descents.

The best time is December through April when temperatures are pleasant (70-80°F). Skip summer entirely unless you enjoy riding in 95°F+ heat with high humidity. Expect to pay around $90-160 per person for a half-day guided trip including bike, helmet, water, and transport. Full-day or more technical options push toward $200. Basic rentals without a guide run $40-70 for the day but you need your own transport and local knowledge.

Pick the smaller group tours if you actually want to ride at a decent pace; the big bus tours often move at the speed of the slowest rider and spend more time posing for photos. Skip the cheapest options that use heavy rental bikes with terrible brakes. Bring your own gloves and a bandana for dust.
