Mountain Hiking in Seoul: What to Know

Seoul sits right against serious mountains with well-maintained trails that range from gentle forest walks to proper steep hikes. Expect a mix of granite ridgelines, pine forest, and the constant backdrop of the city below. Trails are busy on weekends but feel surprisingly remote once you're 30–40 minutes up. Bukhansan is the most popular choice — its highest peak hits about 837m and gives you a solid workout with ropes and chains on the final scramble. Most day hikes take 4–7 hours round-trip including breaks. The paths are clean, signed in English and Korean, and have regular shelters with toilets.

Best time is spring (April–May) for cherry blossoms and autumn (mid-September to late October) when the leaves turn. Summer is hot and humid with thunderstorms; winter can be icy and slippery. Expect to pay around $40–60 for a basic group tour or transport pass and snacks. Private guided hikes with pickup run $160–190 per person. Entry to the national parks themselves is cheap or free.

Pick Bukhansan if you want a proper summit and good views; skip the overly crowded Inwangsan on weekends unless you like crowds and selfies. Bring your own water and a light jacket — the temperature drops fast at the top even in shoulder season. Wear proper hiking shoes; many people slip in sneakers on the rocky sections.
