Mud Volcano Experience in Cartagena: Worth It?

The mud volcano experience is exactly what it sounds like: you climb a small, odd-looking hill about an hour from Cartagena, strip down to a swimsuit, and lower yourself into a pit of warm, thick gray mud. The mud is so buoyant you float without effort. Locals will slather you with more, give you a quick massage if you want, and after 15-20 minutes you climb out, rinse off in a nearby lagoon, and feel strangely clean. It's genuinely weird, a bit touristy, but most people leave smiling. The whole trip usually takes 4-5 hours including transport.

Best time is December to March when it's dry and less humid. Expect to pay around $35-65 per person depending on whether you go in a small group with decent transport or join the cheapest bus tour. Private transfers cost more. The entrance fee and basic mud service are usually included.

Pick a morning departure so you avoid the worst heat and crowds. Skip the overpriced photos they try to sell you on site – your guide or fellow travelers will take plenty. Bring a dark-colored towel you don't mind getting muddy and a change of clothes for the ride back.
