Muir Woods Redwood Hike: Worth It?

Muir Woods is a straightforward 30-45 minute drive north of San Francisco with towering coastal redwoods, shaded trails, and a mostly flat 1-2 mile main loop that feels surprisingly peaceful once you get past the first crowded stretch. Expect a mix of serious hikers and families; the boardwalk section is easy and wheelchair-friendly, while the longer Cathedral Grove or Bootjack trails add moderate hills and fewer people. It’s genuinely beautiful but not wilderness— you’ll hear cars and see plenty of visitors. Best from late fall through early spring (November–April) when crowds are thinner and the forest feels lush after rains; summer and weekends get packed with long entry lines and parking stress.

Expect to pay around $15–35 per person including parking or shuttle fees. Go early (before 9am) or late afternoon to avoid the worst crowds. Skip the gift shop and crowded main parking lot if you can—take the seasonal shuttle from Sausalito instead. Bring water, wear sturdy shoes even for the easy loop, and consider combining it with a stop in nearby Marin Headlands for better views rather than treating it as your only hike.
