Munch Museum Visit in Oslo: Worth It?

The Munch Museum holds the world’s largest collection of Edvard Munch’s work, including multiple versions of The Scream. Expect a modern, light-filled building right by the Oslofjord with rotating exhibitions, so no two visits are identical. The permanent collection shows his development from early drawings through the famous intense paintings to later, quieter works. It’s straightforward to walk through in 60–90 minutes unless you linger. The rooftop terrace is genuinely pleasant on a clear day and gives wide views over the harbor and opera house. Hands-on areas and digital displays help if you’re traveling with teens or want context beyond wall texts.

Best time is late spring through early fall when days are long and the terrace is usable; summer can get crowded around midday. Expect to pay around 150–220 NOK for a standard adult ticket, more if you add a guided slot or combined pass with other museums. Go early on a weekday to avoid school groups. Pick the top-floor highlights and the temporary exhibition; you can comfortably skip the basement cinema and most of the gift shop unless you’re hunting prints. If you’re short on time or energy, the smaller display at the National Museum often suffices and saves both money and hours.
