National Museum of Anthropology: Worth It?

This is one of the world's great museums and easily the best introduction to Mexico's pre-Hispanic cultures. Expect a massive, modern building with two floors: the ground floor holds spectacular artifacts from major civilizations (Olmec, Maya, Aztec, Zapotec), while the upper floor covers living indigenous groups. The central courtyard and the giant Aztec Sun Stone are iconic, but the real highlights are the intricately carved Maya sarcophagus lid from Palenque and the vivid murals and models that actually explain what you're seeing. Plan on 2.5 to 4 hours; it gets exhausting if you try to absorb everything.

Best time is weekday mornings right after opening (around 9-10am) to beat the worst crowds and school groups. Rainy season (June-September) is fine since everything is indoors. Expect to pay around 200-250 MXN for a foreign adult ticket; guided tours or audio guides add another 150-300 MXN depending on group size or language. Combo tickets with other museums can save money if you're doing several sites.

Honest tip: prioritize the Aztec, Maya, and Oaxaca halls on the ground floor and skip or skim the upper floor ethnographic section unless you have lots of time or special interest in modern indigenous crafts. Bring water and wear comfortable shoes; the museum is huge and the stone floors are unforgiving.
