Expect hot, dusty conditions with volcanic landscapes, dry forest, and the chance to see howler monkeys, coatis, and various birds. Rincon de la Vieja is the main draw, offering hiking trails to waterfalls, bubbling mud pots, and fumaroles. Tours usually combine a guided hike with a dip in natural hot springs or a short horseback ride. It's active and outdoorsy rather than relaxing; you'll spend most of the day sweating and walking on uneven ground. Wildlife sightings are decent but not guaranteed like in denser rainforest parks further south.
The dry season (December to April) is best for hiking as trails are less muddy, though it gets very hot. June to November is greener but rain can make some trails slippery or closed. Expect to pay around $80–$150 per person for a half-day to full-day guided tour from Liberia, including transport and park fees. Private tours or ones with extra activities like tubing push toward the higher end.
Pick Rincon de la Vieja for the volcanic features and decent trails. Skip trying to combine it with Santa Rosa or Palo Verde in one day; the distances make it rushed and tiring. Bring your own water and good hiking shoes; many tours don't provide enough of either.
