The Ngong Ping 360 cable car ride takes you 5.7 km across mountains and water from Tung Chung to Ngong Ping plateau in about 25 minutes. You get solid views of the airport, Lantau's green hills, and the giant Tian Tan Buddha that appears as you approach. At the top you'll find the Buddha itself (you can climb the steps for closer views), the Po Lin Monastery for vegetarian food, and a small village with shops and overpriced snacks. The whole area is exposed so it can feel very hot or very windy depending on the weather. Total time from leaving Tung Chung and returning is usually 3–4 hours if you move at a normal pace.
Expect to pay around HKD 400–650 per person depending on whether you choose a standard or glass-bottom cabin and if you buy tickets on the spot or in advance. The best time to go is October to early December when the weather is clearest and temperatures are comfortable. Avoid summer weekends and any day with low cloud — the ride becomes pointless in fog. One honest tip: skip the overpriced “crystal cabin” upgrade unless you really want the see-through floor; the regular ones give you the same views with far less wait. Another tip: combine it with a bus to Tai O fishing village afterward if you have time — the cable car alone feels a bit short otherwise.
