Noryangjin Fish Market: Worth Visiting?

Noryangjin is a proper working wholesale fish market: loud, wet, chaotic, and very much alive. You'll see hundreds of tanks filled with live crabs, eels, fat halibut, and strange-looking shellfish. The early-morning auctions (around 3–6am) are energetic but not touristy. Most visitors arrive later in the morning or early evening to buy seafood and have it cooked at one of the upstairs restaurants. The experience is raw — expect slippery floors, strong smells, and fishmongers who don't speak much English. It's fascinating if you like markets, but can feel overwhelming if you're not into that kind of scene.

Best time is spring or fall. Summer is hot and smelly, winter is freezing at 4am. Go between 10am–1pm or 5–8pm if you're doing the typical eat-and-go visit. Expect to pay around $45–80 per person total if you're doing a guided tour with tasting, or $25–55 if you go independently (seafood cost varies wildly depending on what you pick — king crab and sashimi platters add up fast). A simple grilled fish or hoe (raw fish) meal with soju is usually more reasonable.

Tip: Order live shrimp or scallops to eat raw — they're sweet and excellent here. Skip the overpriced king crab unless you're splitting with a group; it's often frozen anyway and not better than what you'll get in a proper restaurant. Go with a local guide or at least someone who speaks Korean if you want to buy and cook on-site — otherwise you'll overpay or get lost in the negotiation.
