Should You Visit Notre-Dame Cathedral?

Notre-Dame is still worth seeing even after the fire. The exterior is impressive again, with the newly restored spire and cleaned stonework standing out on the Île de la Cité. Inside you’ll find a calm, soaring Gothic space that feels surprisingly intimate despite the crowds. Expect security lines, no photos during Mass, and a one-way route that moves you through fairly quickly. The rose windows and treasury are the highlights; the rest is more atmosphere than individual treasures. It pairs well with a walk around the island or Sainte-Chapelle nearby.

Best time is shoulder season (April–May or September–October) when crowds are lighter and the weather is decent. Avoid summer weekends and late afternoons if possible. Expect to pay around $0–35: free to enter the cathedral itself, roughly $10–15 for tower tickets when they reopen, and $30–70 for a guided walking tour of the cathedral and island depending on length and group size. Audio guides are available but many people skip them.

Honest tips: Go early in the morning or right before closing to shorten the wait. Skip the tower climb if you’re short on time or have mobility issues—the views are nice but not essential. Focus on the experience of just sitting inside for ten minutes rather than rushing through with a crowd.
