Paddle Boarding Condado Lagoon in San Juan

Condado Lagoon is a calm, protected stretch of water right in San Juan with decent water clarity and views of the city skyline and nearby high-rises. Expect a relaxed paddle rather than an adrenaline rush. You'll share the water with kayakers, a few jetskis on the edges, and lots of other beginners. The lagoon is shallow enough in most spots that falling in isn't a big deal, and you can usually see small fish, occasional turtles, and plenty of birds. Most rentals or guided sessions last 1-2 hours; guided tours add basic instruction and a short route toward the mangrove edges.

Best time is December through April when winds are lighter and rain is less likely. Mornings are ideal to avoid the afternoon heat and choppier water from the trade winds. Expect to pay around $25-45 for a basic one-hour rental or $35-60 for a guided session including gear and a short tour. Peak season and weekends push prices toward the higher end.

Pick a morning guided paddle if it's your first time; the instruction is genuinely useful and they steer you away from the busiest channels. Skip sunset tours unless you're already comfortable paddling; the lagoon gets dark fast and the novelty wears off once you can't see much. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, a hat, and a dry bag for your phone.
