Paddleboard Lesson in Honolulu: What to Know

Expect a 90-minute to two-hour session that starts with 20-30 minutes of basic instruction on land or in shallow water, then heads into the ocean. Most lessons take place in the protected waters near Ala Moana or Waikiki where the waves are usually small and forgiving. You’ll learn how to stand, balance, and paddle, then do a short guided tour along the coast. It’s a solid workout for your legs and core, but the main draw is the views of Diamond Head and the chance to see turtles or fish from a different vantage point. Groups are usually 6-10 people; the instructor stays close and gives constant corrections.

The best time is April through October when the trade winds are lighter and the ocean is calmer. Mornings are ideal — aim for a 8 or 9 am start before the afternoon winds pick up and the sun gets intense. Expect to pay around $130–$180 for a group lesson that includes board, paddle, life vest, and transportation from nearby hotels. Private lessons run $250–$350.

Pick a small-group morning lesson if it’s your first time; the extra attention is worth it. Skip the big “sunset cocktail paddle” tours that mix alcohol and stand-up boarding — they’re more party than instruction and the value drops once the sun goes down. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, a rash guard, and a towel; everything else is provided.
