The Royal Palace of Aranjuez is a relaxed, elegant escape about an hour south of Madrid. Expect a large, salmon-pink Bourbon palace set in huge gardens that once fed the royal court. The interior is less opulent than Madrid’s Royal Palace but feels more livable, with lovely porcelain rooms, a charming theater, and boatloads of period furniture. The real highlight for most people is simply wandering the formal gardens and tree-lined walks afterward. Tours from Madrid usually bundle the palace with a short stop in nearby Chinchón or combine it into a longer Toledo-Aranjuez day. A pure half-day version gives you roughly 90 minutes at the site.
Best time is spring (April–June) when the gardens are in bloom and the weather is pleasant for walking; autumn works well too. Summers get hot and crowded. Expect to pay around $70–$130 per person depending on whether you choose a basic coach tour with audio guide or a small-group trip with a live English-speaking guide and comfortable transport. Guided palace visits are worthwhile; the layout and stories add context.
Tip: pick a morning departure so you’re not rushing the gardens in the afternoon heat. Skip the full three-city combo if you only want Aranjuez – it becomes a long, tiring day with too little time at each stop. Bring comfortable shoes and a bottle of water.
