The hike from Parque Lage to Christ the Redeemer is a steep, shaded climb through Atlantic forest that takes most people 2–2.5 hours uphill. You start in the leafy park with its mansion and views of Corcovado, then follow a well-marked but sometimes slippery trail that gains about 700m. At the top you get the classic panoramic shot of Rio without the crowds that arrive by van or train. The return is faster but hard on the knees. Expect heat, humidity, and the chance of mud after rain. Monkeys and birds are common; you might also see stray dogs that know the route better than most guides.
Best time is the shoulder seasons (April–May or September–October) when it's drier and not quite so hot. Avoid the peak summer months if you don't like sweating through your shirt before 10am. Expect to pay around $60–120 total per person including transport from central Rio, a basic guide if you want one, park fees, and the Redeemer ticket at the top. Independent hikers can do it cheaper by taking a taxi to the park and buying the statue entry on arrival.
Tip: start as early as possible; the trail gets hotter and busier after 9am. Skip the full-day guided tours that combine this with the Botanical Garden unless you really want both – they rush the hike and you'll enjoy the forest more on your own pace. Bring plenty of water, wear proper trail shoes, and don't count on shade the entire way.
