Pergamon Museum Berlin: Worth It?

The Pergamon Museum is effectively closed for a massive renovation until 2027. Only a temporary exhibition space is open, showing a selection of the famous Pergamon Altar frieze, the Ishtar Gate, and a few other highlights in a modern but limited setting. Expect a crowded, somewhat rushed experience even with timed tickets; the full grandeur of the original halls is missing. It's still impressive if you're into ancient Near Eastern and Greek art, but many visitors leave feeling it's not quite what they imagined from the postcards.

Best time to visit is shoulder season (April-May or September-October) when crowds are lighter and Berlin weather is decent. Expect to pay around €12-20 for a standard ticket, more like €25-40 if you bundle it with a guided tour or Museum Island combo pass. Go early in the day or late afternoon to avoid peak crowds. Honest tip: if your interest is mainly classical sculpture, just buy the basic skip-the-line ticket and spend an hour in the temporary hall. Skip the expensive panorama add-on or multi-museum tours unless you're a serious antiquities buff; the value drops sharply when the main building isn't open.
