The Phillip Island penguin parade is exactly what it sounds like: every evening at dusk, hundreds of little penguins come ashore in groups, waddle up the beach, and head to their burrows. It's genuinely cute and funny to watch but it's also very managed - expect stadium-style seating, rangers with microphones, and a decent crowd even on quiet nights. The whole experience from Melbourne is a solid 2.5–3 hour drive each way, so most people do it as a full-day trip that can easily run 10–12 hours door-to-door. You'll usually stop at other island spots like the Nobbies or a wildlife sanctuary on the way.
Best time is summer (Dec–Feb) when there are more penguins and longer daylight, though you can see them year-round. Winter has fewer visitors and sometimes rougher seas. Expect to pay around $150–280 per person depending on whether you do a basic coach tour from Melbourne or upgrade to a smaller group, better viewing platform, or include extras like dinner. Private car rental plus entry is possible but the drive at night after a long day is tiring.
Tip: pay the extra for the general viewing stands rather than the premium “close-up” options – the difference is smaller than the marketing suggests and the penguins mostly look the same from 10 metres further back. Skip the overpriced photo packages; just bring a decent phone with night mode. If you're short on time or hate crowds, this one is skippable in favour of seeing wildlife closer to the city.
