Pinglin Tea Tasting: Worth It?

Pinglin sits about 45 minutes east of Taipei in the hills and remains one of the better day trips if you want to understand Taiwanese tea culture without the heavy tourist gloss. Expect a relaxed half-day: you’ll walk through neat rows of tea bushes, watch a simple processing demo, then sit down for several rounds of brewed oolong. The tasting is the main event—light, floral Baozhong and richer Oriental Beauty are usually poured. It’s genuinely informative if you like tea, but it can feel a bit staged if you’re not into the guided explanations. Combine it with a stop at nearby Thousand Island Lake if you want scenery beyond the plantation.

Best time is spring (March–May) for fresh high-mountain harvests or late autumn for drier, clearer weather. Avoid summer weekends when the humidity is brutal and buses fill up. Expect to pay around NT$1,800–3,000 per person depending on whether you join a small-group tour from Taipei or hire a private driver. That usually covers transport, tasting, and a light lunch.

Tip: always ask to try the aged Baozhong if they have it—most groups never get that far. Skip the overpriced “premium” gift boxes at the visitor center; you can buy better tea for less in Taipei’s tea shops once you know what you like.
