A private hammam is one of the better ways to experience Moroccan bath culture without the crowds. Expect to be led into a heated marble room where an attendant (same gender) will scrub you vigorously with a rough glove, removing layers of dead skin, then rinse you with buckets of warm water. This is followed by a mask of ghassoul clay, a steam or sauna session, and usually a massage. The whole process takes 90–120 minutes and leaves you genuinely clean and relaxed. It’s intimate, a bit awkward at first if you’re modest, but efficient and traditional. Most private experiences include pickup and drop-off from your hotel.
Best time is October–April when it’s cooler; the heat feels restorative rather than oppressive. In summer the hammam can feel overwhelming. Expect to pay around $80–150 for a decent private session including scrub, mask, and oil massage. The higher end usually means better facilities, more attentive staff, and a proper private room rather than a partitioned one.
Pick the package that includes both the black soap scrub and a decent massage; skip add-ons like facial treatments unless you have extra time – they’re rarely worth it. Go in the morning when attendants are fresh and you won’t feel rushed before dinner. Bring nothing but yourself; everything from disposable underwear to towels is provided.
