A half-day trip to the Giza Pyramids from central Cairo usually takes 4–8 hours depending on whether you add the Sphinx, a camel ride, or the Grand Egyptian Museum. Expect traffic both ways, crowds of vendors pushing souvenirs and “special access” photos, and the surreal sight of the three pyramids rising above the city sprawl. The site itself is smaller than most people imagine; you can walk around the base of the Great Pyramid in about 20 minutes. Inside the pyramids is cramped, hot, and often not worth the extra ticket unless you really want the experience of climbing steep, narrow passages.
Best time is November to March when it’s cooler and the light is better for photos. Avoid midsummer if you hate 40 °C heat. Expect to pay around $60–$150 per person for a private half-day tour with a decent guide and driver; shared group tours can be cheaper but slower. Going completely independently by Uber and hiring a local guide on-site is possible but more stressful.
Pick a morning private tour that includes the Sphinx and Valley Temple but skip the overpriced camel or horse rides near the plateau entrance; the animals are poorly kept and the “photo ops” are a tourist trap. If your budget allows, add the Grand Egyptian Museum instead of the old Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square; it’s far better organized and the artifacts are stunning.
