Rafting Near San Jose: What You Need to Know

Most rafting trips marketed from San Jose involve a 2–3 hour drive each way to the Pacuare River, so the full day (or overnight) is a serious commitment. Expect Class III–IV rapids with plenty of drops, waves, and a few swimming sections if you flip. The river is genuinely fun and scenic with jungle walls and occasional wildlife, but the long van rides mean you’ll spend more time traveling than on the water. A typical trip includes safety briefing, paddling instruction, lunch on the riverbank, and return transport to San Jose by late afternoon or evening.

The best time is the rainy season (May–November) when the river has higher water and more exciting rapids. December to April is drier and calmer; some operators still run but the experience is noticeably tamer. Expect to pay around $90–$140 per person for a full-day Pacuare trip including transport, gear, guide, and lunch. Multi-day options with camping run $200–$350.

Pick a one-day Pacuare trip if it’s your first time rafting; it’s the most popular and reliably good. Skip anything advertised as “easy family tubing” if you actually want whitewater – it’s usually a slow float on a different, flatter section. Bring quick-dry clothes, water shoes or sandals with straps, and sunscreen. The rest is provided.
