Zurich River Limmat Boat Tour: Worth It?

The Limmat boat tour gives you a relaxed, low-effort way to see Zurich's old town, the Grossmünster, Fraumünster, and the point where the river flows out of Lake Zurich. Expect a calm 45-90 minute ride with simple narration (sometimes in two languages). It's not a party boat or a luxury cruise – just pleasant transport with decent views of bridges, waterfront buildings, and swans. In good weather you get nice light on the historic facades; in bad weather you mostly stare at wet glass.

Summer (June-August) is easiest – boats run frequently and you can sit outside. Spring and early autumn are fine too if you're dressed for it. Avoid November-February unless you specifically want the Christmas lights version. Expect to pay around CHF 25-45 per adult depending on duration and whether you add a drink or snack. Kids usually travel cheaper.

Pick the shorter midday or late-afternoon departure if you're short on time; the longer evening tour is nicer in summer because the light lasts. Skip the overpriced "dinner cruise" version – you're better off eating properly on land before or after. Sit on the right side when heading upstream for the best views of the old town. Bring sunglasses and a light jacket even on sunny days; the breeze on the water cools you down fast.
