Sunset from a Marrakesh rooftop is exactly what you hope it will be: the call to prayer echoing across the pink city, the Atlas Mountains turning orange, and the medina rooftops glowing while you sip a drink. Expect a lively but not rowdy atmosphere – lots of tourists, some locals, occasional live Gnawa music, and a lot of phones in the air. The best ones give you decent views over the Koutoubia or toward the mountains. It’s genuinely relaxing after a hot day in the souks, though it can get crowded and the service is often slow once the sun starts dropping.
Go between March and early June or October to November. Summer evenings are still beautiful but brutally hot until after 8pm; winter days are shorter and can be surprisingly chilly once the sun disappears. Expect to pay around 250–450 MAD per person for a decent rooftop with a drink and a small plate – more if you want a full meal or a table with prime view. The really cheap spots are usually packed and have average drinks.
Pick a terrace with a clear western view and book a table for 45 minutes before sunset if you want the best spot. Skip the big hotel rooftops that charge entry fees and feel corporate; smaller riad terraces or casual cafés are usually better value. Bring a light jacket – it cools down fast – and don’t overpay for the “VIP sunset package” unless it actually includes something you want.
